Meet Melanie

“Forget hustle. Do not fix. Cease striving. Healing is a different kind of hard work.”

— Melanie

Hi, I’m Melanie Storrusten, LCSW.

I’ve been a therapist since 2005, and got my start here in South Georgia with my MSW from Valdosta State University and working at Turning Point Hospital in Moultrie. In 2009, I moved to Atlanta and worked in mental health and addiction treatment programs at every level of care, from non-profit programs serving homeless women to high-end holistic treatment programs in Midtown. In 2016 I opened my own practice in Tucker, which I still run from afar, managing a crew of excellent therapists and offering training and clinical supervision to the Atlanta therapist community.

My office and my personality are laid back, unpretentious, and welcoming. I will for sure be barefoot. My southern accent slips on and off mostly outside of my control and awareness. Most sessions will include laughter. All sessions will include encouragement for more self-compassion and grace. I am having a contest with JJ Widener to be the therapist with the most tattoos. My goal is for you to feel completely at ease and comfortable to be your full, most authentic self, and I do my best to lead by example in that regard.

In my own work with clients, my favorite and best things are:

  • helping people connect to wiser, stronger, more confident and loving parts of themselves

  • helping people work with difficult emotions, like anxiety, grief, anger, etc.

  • working with people who have difficult relationships with their bodies - due to chronic pain, illness, disability, dysphoria, dissociation, stress, panic, body image concerns, etc.

  • helping people find enough self-love (and practical plans) to leave toxic relationships or workplaces

  • supporting folks who feel rejected by their families or communities

  • shining a light for folks who are navigating major decisions or life transitions

  • supporting people facing infertility, pregnancy loss, or unplanned pregnancies

  • working with couples or families so that everyone feels really seen, heard, and understood

  • working with especially brave people who want to face their addictions, traumas, secrets, or shame

  • finding joy and laughter while working on hard stuff
